Wulfblat of Ragnarok

Character History

As a player, Wulfblat was not that bright. He must have died a dozen times at level 1 trying to learn the knack of the game and kill Cujo. After soaring to the dizzy level of 2, Wulfblat became a more stable player and rapidly advanced to level 19 (thanks to the realms coded by Bob the Elf and Abc) and then became the first player to advance to wizardhood on SQUINT.

My first attempts at rooms and objects on SQUINT were awful - truly awful! A handful of these objects exist today on Ragnarok in nearly their original form, but I'll be damned if I'm going to draw attention to them! Fortunately I discovered the common room code, and how to best use the common object codes, so my realm quickly took shape, and worked reasonably well. The basic theme was The Realm of Spheres into which I threw a few Lovecraft monsters and a large number of my own creations. I also began to work on the mudlib, fixing bugs and making enhancements as they were needed. SQUINT was shut down within a year after opening, and Wulfblat ceased to be.

About half a year after the death of SQUINT, a fellow former wizard, Rodolf, informed me of a new mud that he and three other coding wizards (Klive, Skeezics and Fizban) had started: Ragnarok. Once again Wulfblat found himself as the lone player wandering through the mud and testing Klive's new area. Soon Wulfblat became a wizard and ported much of his old Spheres Quest code to Ragnarok, after adding map pages for the realm, and giving it a much needed face-lift (removing the bulk of old Spheres Quest facade and concentrating more on a Lovecraft theme). I also added a newbie area, known as Isle of the Smurfs, into which I poured a great deal of detail and humor. I also started a Viking Village for mid-level players, but Wulfblat was promoted to an arch-wizard and I ran out of time to create my own unique areas as bug-fixing, assisting players and other wizards, and mudlib enhancement took over all of my spare mud time. Alas, Ragnarok was shutdown too, and Wulfblat was once again without a home.

SQUINT mud made a brief reappearance soon after Ragnarok vanished, and fellow arch-wizard Galadriel and Wulfblat returned for brief stints as dieties before SQUINT shutdown forever.

In the fall of 1993 Galadriel notified me that she and Fizban would be reopening Ragnarok and were in need of help coding the mudlib. Lightning and Wulfblat returned to Ragnarok as demi-gods, where we worked like demons along with Fizban and Galadriel to finish the game and open it to the public.

Wulfblat has remained a demi-god on Ragnarok to this day. Some of his accomplishments are the quicktyper, the common guild object with builtin party object, the how-to-build-a-guild document, the Adventurer's Guild, the Hero's Guild, the Wizard's Guild, the equipment rental lockers, crash recovery, the new bulletin boards, potions and scrolls, the new hero area and hero advancement code, primary/offhand/two-handed weapon handling, combat arena, new weights, new weapon and armor class guidelines, and a variety of other items and changes that have slipped my mind.

Are You Like Wulfblat?

When I started Wulfblat as a player, I had intended him to be like a more dashing version of me. After Wulfblat became a wizard, however, I decided to portray him somewhat differently. Wulfblat isn't quite the pessimist that I am in real life, and in general Wulfblat is a lot more patient than I am (I seldom suffer fools gladly). Physically, Wulfblat is a very short, very fat humanoid with long stringy hair, brown eyes, and a short beard, who wears a flowing purple robe with gold trim and Birkenstocks. Wulfblat doesn't look much like me at all: I'm around 6 feet tall, 170 pounds, have short brown hair (whats left of it), green eyes, and own neither robe nor Birkenstocks.
